Handyman in Clear Lake, TX
Clear Lake lies just south of Pasadena, across Armand Bayou and Horsepen Bayou, on the way to the water body it's named for. In fact, the line between the two is blurry: most of the University of Houston–Clear Lake campus sits inside Pasadena's city limits, and Pasadena annexed part of the old Clear Lake City planning area on its eastern side. The community exists because of NASA. When the Manned Spacecraft Center, now Johnson Space Center, opened here in the early 1960s, Humble Oil's Friendswood Development Company planned a new suburb on former ranch land, and engineers, scientists and contractors moved in by the thousands. Houston annexed most of it in 1977. The housing tells that story. The early subdivisions, like Timber Cove, whose 1963 neighborhood pool was designed to resemble a Mercury capsule, and the first sections of Clear Lake Forest, have 1960s brick ranch homes on wooded lots. Through the 1970s and 1980s came Middlebrook, Brook Forest, Bay Glen, Camino South, Oakbrook and Bay Oaks, with larger brick homes and plenty of two-story floor plans, and the 1990s and 2000s added more along Bay Area Boulevard. Mature pines and oaks shade much of it.
Clear Lake life revolves around Space Center Houston and Johnson Space Center, the University of Houston–Clear Lake, and the water. Bay Area Boulevard, El Camino Real, Clear Lake City Boulevard, NASA Parkway and Space Center Boulevard are the main routes, with Highway 3 and I-45 on the west and Ellington Field nearby. Armand Bayou Nature Center protects a large stretch of coastal prairie, forest and bayou on the north edge, and Bay Area Park next to it has trails and a dog park. Families gather at Sylvan Rodriguez Park and the Clear Lake recreation center on Diana Lane, and the Freeman Branch Library serves the community. Clear Creek ISD schools anchor neighborhoods, and the Clear Lake area keeps its own identity even as part of Houston. The tree cover is one of its pleasures and one of its chores: pine needles and oak leaves fill gutters, shade grows mildew on siding, and roots work at fences and walks. Homes here are often owned by long-time engineers and retirees who know exactly what they want done and appreciate careful, precise work.

Jobs we handle a lot around Clear Lake
Clear Lake's mix of 1960s ranches and 1980s and 1990s two-stories leads to a predictable list. Drywall cracks and nail pops show up from foundation movement on the clay, along with taped seams that have loosened in high entries and stairwells. Ceiling fans and light fixtures get replaced in vaulted rooms and two-story foyers, with our licensed electricians making the connections. Older homes are swapping out original fixtures and switches, adding dimmers and smart switches, and installing video doorbells and smart thermostats. Bathrooms and kitchens need faucet and toilet repairs and new shutoffs and supply lines. Outside, gutters clog with pine needles and oak leaves, fences lean from roots and wind, and shaded brick and siding need regular cleaning. Before hurricane season many homeowners ask for a full check of gutters, caulking, exterior doors and loose fixtures. Interior painting and touch-ups are common too, especially in tall rooms that are hard to reach without the right ladders.
Questions we hear in Clear Lake
Can you work on the high walls and ceilings in a two-story Clear Lake home?
Yes. Many 1980s and 1990s homes here have two-story entries, stairwell walls and vaulted family rooms. We bring the ladders and staging needed to safely repair drywall, paint, change light fixtures and install fans at those heights. Stairwell work takes more setup, so mention it when you book and we'll plan the time and equipment for it.
Our street flooded during Harvey. Can you help with lingering repairs?
Yes. Parts of Clear Lake flooded in 2017, and many homes still have small leftovers: trim that was replaced in a hurry, doors that never closed right afterward, patched drywall that's cracking, or baseboards that don't quite match. We work through those items, rehang doors, re-patch and blend drywall, and match trim and paint so the rooms finally look finished. Any active moisture or mold concerns should be checked first so we're repairing a dry wall.
Can you set up a smart thermostat and video doorbell in an older home?
Usually, yes. Many 1960s and 1970s homes have older thermostat wiring that may lack a common wire, and some doorbells run on low-voltage transformers that are too weak for a video doorbell. We check the existing wiring and transformer, and our licensed electricians add or upgrade what's needed so the devices power properly and connect to your Wi-Fi.
