Handyman in South Houston, TX

South Houston is a small, separate city of about 16,000 people tucked against Pasadena's western edge, covering only about three square miles between Hobby Airport, the I-45 corridor and Pasadena's older neighborhoods. It's older than most of its neighbors. The Western Land Company founded the settlement in 1907 under the name Dumont, a post office came in 1910, and in 1913 the town incorporated as South Houston. Early growth was slow, and like the rest of this side of Harris County, the real building boom came after World War II, when workers from the Ship Channel plants, the airport and the growing industrial east side needed affordable homes. As a result, South Houston's housing is overwhelmingly modest single-story homes from the late 1940s through the 1960s: small frame houses, brick ranches and bungalow-style cottages on narrow lots, many of them updated, added onto or converted over the decades, with some newer infill homes mixed in. A lot of the city's streets follow a simple grid of lettered avenues and numbered streets, and the houses on them have had seventy-plus years to settle on the flat, slow-draining clay. That age and that ground set the tone for most of the repairs we do here.

South Houston's main streets carry plenty of history. Spencer Highway runs through the heart of the city, and local legend holds that circus elephants owned by a former mayor helped build it. Allen Genoa Road, Old Galveston Road and South Shaver Street are the other main routes, and the 1937 library building still stands in the park next to the current branch library on Avenue A. South Houston High School serves the whole city, and most of it falls in Pasadena ISD. Hobby Airport sits just to the west, so the drone of jets is part of daily life, and I-45 and Beltway 8 are minutes away, making the city an easy commute to downtown Houston and the plants alike. It's a working, close-knit place where many families have been in the same house for a generation and where plenty of newer owners are buying older homes to fix up. Lots are small and houses sit close together, so we work tidily, keep driveways and sidewalks clear, and keep noise and mess to a minimum for the neighbors.

What South Houston neighbors book most

South Houston is right on our doorstep, a few minutes west of central Pasadena, so even a single dripping faucet or a door that won't close is worth a call.

Jobs we handle a lot around South Houston

In South Houston, older houses mean older systems, so a lot of our work is in kitchens and bathrooms. We replace dripping faucets and worn cartridges, fix running toilets and reset rocking ones on new seals, swap corroded shutoff valves and supply lines, and replace failing garbage disposals. Doors that have shifted with decades of foundation movement need planing, shimming or new hinges, and walls show cracks at the corners of doors and windows that we repair and blend into the existing texture. Light fixtures, ceiling fans and switches get updated from originals, with our licensed electricians handling the connections. Outside, it's short runs of wood or chain-link fence that need new posts or gates rehung, gutters that need clearing after a storm, and mildew washed off siding and walks. Landlords and investors keep us busy too, with make-ready punch lists between tenants and repair lists from inspections when a house changes hands.

Questions we hear in South Houston

My house is small and old. Should I fix things one at a time, or wait?

It usually makes more sense to bundle them. Older South Houston homes tend to have several small issues at once, like a sticking door, a running toilet, a cracked wall and a light that flickers, and handling them in one visit saves you the cost of multiple trips. Make a list as you notice things, send it with a few photos, and we'll quote the whole visit up front.

Can you replace the old light fixtures and switches in my house?

Yes. Many homes here still have original or decades-old fixtures and switches. We remove the old fixture, check the box and wiring condition, and our licensed electricians install the new fixture, switch or dimmer with clean, secure connections. If we find a scorched connection, a box that's too small or wiring that looks unsafe, we show you what we found and fix it before anything new goes up.

My toilet rocks and there's a soft spot on the floor. What does that mean?

It usually means the wax seal has been leaking for a while, letting water soak into the floor around the flange. In older South Houston homes on pier and beam, that can soften the subfloor; on a slab, it may just damage the flooring. We pull the toilet, check the flange and floor, and let you know how far the damage goes. Small areas can often be repaired before resetting the toilet on a new seal; bigger rot needs flooring repair first.

Do you work on houses being sold or bought?

Yes. We handle repair lists from home inspections, getting a house ready to list, and fixing the small things a buyer or lender flags. Send us the inspection report or the list, and we'll quote the items we can take care of so you can plan.
