Handyman in Deer Park, TX

Deer Park sits just east of Pasadena, wedged between the Houston Ship Channel on the north and La Porte on the south and east. Simeon H. West laid out the town in 1892 and named it for the deer that still roamed the coastal prairie, and the city likes to call itself the Birthplace of Texas, because the first treaty after the Battle of San Jacinto was drafted in Dr. George Moffitt Patrick's cabin within today's city limits; a replica of the cabin stands on Center Street. For decades Deer Park stayed tiny. Shell opened its refinery here in 1929, but the city didn't incorporate until 1948, and as late as 1950 it counted only a few hundred residents. Then the plants along the channel expanded and the families followed: by 1970 the population had passed twelve thousand, and today it's about 34,000. That growth curve explains the housing. Most of Deer Park is single-story brick ranch homes built from the mid-1950s through the 1970s on tidy, regular streets, with some newer subdivisions and larger homes on the south side and a scattering of 1980s and 1990s two-stories. It's a city of owners who keep their houses up, many of them working shifts at the plants.

Deer Park life centers on Center Street and the blocks around it, where the city hall, the library and the Patrick cabin replica sit. Dow Park is the big gathering place, about forty acres with a community pool, sports fields, a rose garden and a splash pad, and the Deer Park Nature Preserve offers a mile and a half of trails through wetland and woods. Friday nights in the fall belong to the Deer Park Deer at Abshier Stadium. The plants line the north side of town along the channel, and Highway 225 carries traffic toward Pasadena and Houston to the west and La Porte to the east. Just beyond the city line, the San Jacinto Battleground and its monument mark the spot where Texas won its independence in 1836, and the Battleground Golf Course sits nearby. San Jacinto College's central campus is a short drive west on Spencer Highway. It's a close, settled city with deep roots in the industry along the water, and that shows in the houses: well kept, often updated piece by piece over the years by owners who plan to stay. The to-do lists we see reflect that kind of steady care rather than neglect.

What Deer Park neighbors book most

Deer Park is right next door to us, a quick run down Spencer Highway or Highway 225, and we're used to scheduling around plant shifts so someone can be home without losing sleep.

Jobs we handle a lot around Deer Park

In Deer Park we see a lot of the jobs that come with mid-century ranch homes on clay soil. Interior doors that drift out of square and stop latching, hairline cracks over doors and along ceiling seams, and nail pops in older drywall all come back with the seasons. Many owners are updating rooms one at a time, which means new ceiling fans in bedrooms and living rooms, light fixtures replacing original builder fixtures, and dimmers and smart switches added along the way, with our licensed electricians making the connections. Garages here work hard, holding tools, coolers, fishing gear and holiday decorations, so wall shelving, overhead storage and pegboard systems are regular requests. Outside, it's wood fences that lean after a storm, gates that sag and drag, gutters and downspouts that need clearing and re-securing, and brick, siding and driveways that need a good wash to remove mildew and grime. Bathrooms in older homes keep us busy too, with running toilets, worn faucets and tired shutoff valves.

Questions we hear in Deer Park

I work rotating shifts. Can you schedule around that?

Yes. A lot of Deer Park homeowners work at the plants on rotating or twelve-hour shifts, and we'd rather fit your schedule than make you take time off. We can book early in the day so you can sleep afterward, or work while you're on shift if someone else will be home or you're comfortable leaving us access. We give a real time window and stick to it.

Why does the outside of my house get so dirty so fast?

Part of it is the climate: heat and humidity grow mildew and algae on the shady sides of brick and siding. Part of it is location. Homes this close to the channel and Highway 225 pick up a film of dust and grime that settles on siding, windows, gutters and driveways. Pressure washing at the right pressure for each surface, with a mildew cleaner where it's needed, brings it back without damaging mortar, paint or wood.

Can you build shelving in my garage that will hold heavy tools?

Yes. We anchor heavy-duty shelving and wall systems into the studs, not just the drywall, and size them for what you actually plan to store. For overhead racks, we locate the ceiling joists and mount to them with rated hardware. We'll plan the layout around your vehicles, doors and water heater so everything still opens and clears.
